Rule by Ellen Goodlett

Hello everyone!

Welcome back for another review.

This one is going to be for the book Rule by Ellen Goodlette.

I was fortunate enough to receive this novel from Hachette in exchange for an honest review.

Let’s jump into it!

Goodreads Rating: 3.62/5
Pages: 376 Pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Published: September 11th, 2018
Genre: Fantasy, YA

Three girls with three deadly secrets. Only one can wear the crown.

The king is dying, his heir has just been murdered, and rebellion brews in the east. But the kingdom of Kolonya and the outer Reaches has one last option before it descends into leaderless chaos.

Or rather, three unexpected options.

Zofi has spent her entire life trekking through the outer Reaches with her band of Travelers. She would do anything to protect the band, her family. But no one can ever find out how far she’s already gone.

Akeylah was raised in the Eastern Reach, surrounded by whispers of rebellion and abused by her father. Desperate to escape, she makes a decision that threatens the whole kingdom.

Ren grew up in Kolonya, serving as a lady’s maid and scheming her way out of the servants’ chambers. But one such plot could get her hung for treason if anyone ever discovers what she’s done.

When the king summons the girls, they arrive expecting arrest or even execution. Instead they learn the truth: they are his illegitimate daughters, and one must become his new heir. But someone in Kolonya knows their secrets, and that someone will stop at nothing to keep the sisters from their destiny… to rule.

Magic, mystery, and blackmail abound in this sensational and striking fantasy debut.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐

This novel was one that I had laying around on my bookshelf for quite a while. As you can see it came out in September, so this review has been in the making for a long while now!

I definitely didn’t think this novel would become my new favourite novel, and it definitely isn’t, but it was a novel that I found myself getting drawn into and reading quite quickly.

The writing in this novel wasn’t anything that I feel the need to rave about. It didn’t have any moments in which I found myself in love with the writing, but it wasn’t horrible either. It was just in the middle.

The plot and characters were the parts of this novel that really made the read worthwhile for me. The three half-sisters that we follow were so interesting to follow and you really do end up falling in love with each of them in every way. They are a very unique trio but they also find ways in which they mesh and work together.

I have to say that the character development is definitely my favourite aspect of this book. It was a delight to see these girls grow from their pasts and become strong and independant women who have to survive the rough life in court.

I also really enjoyed seeing this book feature a mystery. It’s always nice to see this trope featured in fantasy novels, especially novels that feature a storyline that is pretty common.

I’m also happy to share that I didn’t end up figuring out the mystery, and that’s always something that makes me happy when reading a mystery. Especially since I’m not a very good guesser.

Alright everyone, that concludes my review for Rule by Ellen Goodlett.

Thank you so much for reading and don’t forget to follow my blog as well as my social media sites linked below.
