Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke

Hey guys!

I’m back again with another review!

This time I’m reviewing Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke, which I was lucky enough to receive from Raincoast Books in exchange for an honest review.

Let’s get into it!

Goodreads Rating: 3.82/5Β 36949995
Pages: 384 Pages
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
Published: October 2nd, 2018
Genre: Fantasy, YA

Plot:
Frey, Ovie, Juniper, and Runa are the Boneless Merciesβ€”girls hired to kill quickly, quietly, and mercifully. But Frey is weary of the death trade and, having been raised on the heroic sagas of her people, dreams of a bigger life.

When she hears of an unstoppable monster ravaging a nearby town, Frey decides this is the Mercies’ one chance out. The fame and fortune of bringing down such a beast would ensure a new future for all the Mercies. In fact, her actions may change the story arc of women everywhere.

“They called us the Mercies, or sometimes the Boneless Mercies. They said we were shadows, ghosts, and if you touched our skin, we dissolved into smoke.”

This novel was an amazing story filled with compassion, strength, and incredible female characters who were very different but had the ability to all work together seamlessly.

I found the atmosphere of this novel to be so inviting and addicting once you got into the meat of the novel. Personally, it took me a little while to really get into the novel, but once I did, it was hard to put it down.

The characters in this novel played their parts very well. I was hooked on to each and every one of their stories and it was very hard to find flaws in any of them, including the antagonists.

“It will all be over soon, lamb. No more pain, just peace.”

Compassion was one thing this novel had an abundance of. It was heartwarming to see characters care so very much for the people that surrounded them, especially when their job revolved around ending the lives of the sick and dying.

You could tell whilst reading this novel that the author put a lot of thought into the setting and tone this book had. Reading this novel, especially in the fall, you could feel the cold these girls talked about, as if you were there. Reading about the villages the Mercies visit on their adventure was an incredibly enjoyable experience, especially since I felt as though I was there with them.

The plot of this novel was also one that I found so compelling. It was an adventure story but when combined with the incredible characters and setting, it created a novel that was very hard to put down.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this novel. It had the atmosphere that I was desperately in search of, especially with the weather getting cooler where I live. Additionally, I loved following the characters I grew to love on their journey to change their lives.

I highly recommend you pick this novel up if you haven’t already!

That concludes my review for Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke.
