Series I Want to Start This Year

Hello everyone!

Seeing as how I haven’t finished another book yet (I’m working on it, I promise), I figured I’d talk about a couple series I’d like to finally, at least, start this year. 

That’s basically the gist of the post!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Plot: 

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

This is a series that I’ve heard a lot of things about, and it seems to be a well loved series. I have also really wanted to read Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, but seeing as how I’d like to start with her early work.

The Half Bad Trilogy by Sally Green

Plot:

Sixteen-year-old Nathan lives in a cage: beaten, shackled, trained to kill. In a modern-day England where two warring factions of witches live amongst humans, Nathan is an abomination, the illegitimate son of the world’s most terrifying and violent witch, Marcus. Nathan’s only hope for survival is to escape his captors, track down Marcus, and receive the three gifts that will bring him into his own magical powers—before it’s too late. But how can Nathan find his father when there is no one safe to trust, not even family, not even the girl he loves?

This series is one that I have owned as a part of my collection for quite a while, and I’ve just never picked it up. I bought it on a whim one day when Chapters was having an insane sale on their YA paperbacks, therefore, I own it but haven’t read it yet. I will hopefully start it this year!

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

Plot:

A thrilling and original coming-of-age novel for adults about a young man practicing magic in the real world.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he’s still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery. 

He also discovers all the other things people learn in college: friendship, love, sex, booze, and boredom. Something is missing, though. Magic doesn’t bring Quentin the happiness and adventure he dreamed it would. After graduation he and his friends make a stunning discovery: Fillory is real. But the land of Quentin’s fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he could have imagined. His childhood dream becomes a nightmare with a shocking truth at its heart. 

This is a series that I actually have, kind of, started. I started reading the first novel sometime last year, and put it down because it was during the time I had my horrible reading slump. I was initially very interested in this series because there are several claims that this novel is, somewhat, like Harry Potter, and obviously I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter. So it seemed like a simple decision.

Lightbringer by Brent Weeks

Plot:

Guile is the Prism, the most powerful man in the world. He is high priest and emperor, a man whose power, wit, and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace. Yet Prisms never last, and Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live.

When Guile discovers he has a son, born in a far kingdom after the war that put him in power, he must decide how much he’s willing to pay to protect a secret that could tear his world apart.

This is another series that I have started, and I did get quite far into the first novel, but again, it was started during my reading slump, so I decided to put it down. There are a lot of mixed reviews on this series, a lot of people say that Brent Weeks has a horrible grasp on what women are like, and that is definitely something that I’m not a fan of, but I do remember liking the concept of the novel as well as some aspects of the writing, so I’d like to read the first novel and make my own mind up in regards to this novel.

Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi

Plot:

Alice Alexis Queensmeadow 12 rates three things most important: Mother, who wouldn’t miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. Father disappeared from Ferenwood with only a ruler, almost three years ago. But she will have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is Oliver whose own magic is based in lies and deceit. Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss.

The first novel in this series (Furthermore) was one that was very popular last year and I had wanted to read it very bad but could never justify purchasing it for the price it was at, then I found it on Book Outlet this year for an amazing price so I decided to purchase it. I have yet to start the novel, but I’m very excited to finally get to it because I’ve heard amazing things about the premise of the novel and I can’t wait to see what I think about it.

The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare

Plot:

This series is one that I was preparing to read last year. I had gotten through most of The Mortal Instruments books, but then I hit a rut after those, so I took a break. This year I definitely want to finally get to The Dark Artifices series because every seems to love this series to much, and I’d like to see why.

Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel

Plot:

This series is a science fiction series that I’ve wanted to read for such a long time but I really couldn’t justify purchasing more books. I really want to try getting to this during this year, but it is close to the end of the TBR because I don’t already own the novel, so I’m not positive I’ll get to it.
