Hey guys!
Today I have a review for the book Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo.
This read has been one that I’ve been anticipating for a long, long while. I’m so glad that I was able to finally pick this novel up because I enjoyed the plot and character so very much.
Let’s get into the review!
Goodreads Rating: 4.05/5
Pages: 358 Pages
Published: June 5th, 2012
Publisher: Henry Holt and Company
Genre: Fantasy and Young Adult
Plot:
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

My Thoughts
As a small disclaimer: I read the Six of Crows Duology before starting this series.
That being said, I don’t think that it really affects how I read this series, I read it a while ago and don’t remember much of the small details of Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, since I read it quite a while ago.
I found this premise to be so fun to read about, but I did think that the plot felt slightly cliche to me (best friends fall in love, girl doesn’t know she has powers and then is a saviour of everyone…), so that was kind of boring to read.
As for characters, I really enjoyed reading about Alina coming into her powers and growing as an individual. She wasn’t the most likeable character at the beginning of the book, so I’m very glad that her character showed a lot of growth.
Additionally I liked the added aspect of a type of “grisha school” because honestly, who doesn’t like watching magic people fight and learn about magic? That’s right, no one.
There were a lot of moments in this novel that I found I couldn’t put it down (probably the reason I finished it in a day), it had so many twists and turns and I’m so excited for the next novel in the series.
Alright guys, that concludes my quick review of Shadow and Bone.
Thank you so much for reading, and don’t forget to follow my blog as well as my other social media sites.
Until next time,

I’ve been holding off on reading Six of Crows until I read Shadow and Bone! I need to read this really soon bc I’m tired of missing the boat on these!

You honestly do not have to read shadow and bone first! I don’t find it to disturb my reading experience of shadow and bone at all!

Really? Good! People were saying it was easier to read that first so I was bummed. I have Shadow and Bone but I’ve wanted to read Six of Crows so much!

I was in the same boat, I really wanted to get to SOC because so many people were talking about how amazing it was. I also did read it so long ago, so if I did encounter anything that would have come from Shadow and Bone, I definitely wouldn’t remember.

I am so tempted to just fly through them all, but I have so many other books I want to read this month so I’m sure when I’ll end up reading the sequel!

It’s nice to hear someone’s thoughts on Shadow and Bone bc I feel like that series doesn’t get as much attention as Six of Crows. Personally, I much preferred Six of Crows, but it was a while back that I read Shadow and Bone so I don’t actually remember much of the series at this point.

Six of crows is still definitely my favourite series out of the two, but that doesn’t mean that shadow and bone isn’t a super interesting and strong series on its own!
