Room by Emma Donoghue

It’s finally August, and after my amazing reading month last month, I wanted to start off strong.

I watched Room when it first came out and I have been wanting to read the book ever since because the movie itself was so amazing. Thankfully I saw this book for $5 at Barnes and Noble and picked it up right away.

I have to say that this book didn’t make me as emotional as the movie did, I don’t know if this is because I read a lot of it during the day around my family/at school, but the movie definitely made me cry more.

I’m just going to jump into the review now!

Plot:

This novel is one that is raved about by everyone and I see why that’s the case now.

This was told through the eyes of 5-year-old Jack and was interesting and heartbreaking at the same time.

It’s obvious that this boy never really thought of his life as horrible, he was happy with what he had and he was happy to spend every day with his Ma. This is probably why I loved hearing the story through his eyes more than I would have liked it if it were third person or through the eyes of Ma.

The writing in this novel was incredible. Donoghue managed to capture a certain innocence that you only get when you’re talking to children, all the while managing to show you the awful realities of what these two were going through.

I must admit that at times this novel was uncomfortable to read and slightly unnerving, but I do think that added to the overall effect that Donoghue was potentially trying to get across.

Jack was a character you couldn’t help but fall in love with. Everything he did, he did with joy and happiness and innocence and you couldn’t ever fault him for anything, not that you’d ever want to.

I did find myself disliking Ma at times, but I never really had any right to. She was resourceful, smart, strong, and such an incredible mother to her son. Despite the things that she went through, she would always find a way to care for her child in the way all mothers do – and that was amazing to see.

Additionally, I was really happy that this book took us through their journey of getting out of the room and how they coped following their escape. Watching Jack experience everything for the first time, and getting to be in his head whilst he did so was really interesting to see, especially since we don’t have much recollection of our own memories of seeing all these new things for the first time.

All in all, this novel broke my heart and put it back together all in one go. It was an inspiring and poignant read that I think is important for everyone to pick up!
